This weekend I had the delightful experience of being in a boatload of traffic. As soon as we thought we were in the clear, boom. More traffic.
It was excruciating on some levels, I will admit, but I was reminded of a quote a friend posted on Facebook the day before:
Nothing in the world can bother you as much as your own mind, I tell you. In fact, others seem to be bothering you, but it is not others, it is your own mind. – Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
Oh, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, you got me!
I was comfortable, I was with my 2 favorite people in the world in a car, and the only suffering we experienced really came from within.
Sure, we weren’t moving despite being in a vehicle with a destination,
but we would get there.
Sure, an angry husband and a crying baby weren’t at the top of my list of desires,
but we had long stretches of peace and fun as well.
And okay, a decision made in poor judgment to eat at Friendly’s of all places was not the best idea in the world even though we knew it would guarantee a changing table,
but I got to reflect on how much I have grown in 30 years while Friendly’s has really stayed exactly the same.
Traffic taught me to get a hold of myself and quit suffering already, and so I decided to.
At every corner in our lives there is a lesson
Traffic was teaching me to slow down. To reflect on an awesome weekend with my guys. To remember it’s the journey, not the destination. And of course, to be grateful for all the amazing things that are happening in my life, and that if my “problem” is traffic, I’ve got it made.
Traffic reminded me of my fortune.
And let’s be honest, I’m not walking around all Om all the time, but even fleeting reminders of how good life really is can help when you start feeling like a victim.
What are the “difficulties” in your life trying to teach you?
Be a champ and leave me some comments, I always love hearing from you.
